Simple checks at home

These kitchen checks are only a rough guide and cannot prove purity. Raw honey can crystallise with time and in the cold — that is natural. A food lab test is the only reliable way to check honey.

  1. The water glass test
    Test 01

    The water glass test

Gently drop a spoonful of honey into a glass of room-temperature water. Do not stir.

Pure sign It sinks and settles at the bottom as a lump instead of mixing in straight away.

  2. The thumb test
    Test 02

    The thumb test

Put a small drop of honey on your thumb and hold your hand still for a few seconds.

Pure sign The drop stays where it is and keeps its shape rather than running off.

  3. The paper test
    Test 03

    The paper test

Place a drop of honey on a piece of plain blotting paper or a paper towel.

Pure sign It sits on top as a bead and leaves no wet ring spreading around it.

Questions about this product

Why has my honey gone thick or grainy?

Crystallisation is natural for raw honey, especially in winter. Warm the closed jar in a bowl of warm water to soften it.

Does honey need the fridge?

No. The fridge makes it crystallise faster. Keep it in a cupboard with the lid closed.

Can children have honey?

Honey should not be given to babies under 12 months old.

Why does the colour vary?

Colour and taste depend on the flowers the bees visited, so they can change from one harvest to the next.

Can I return it?

Opened food products cannot be returned. If your jar arrives damaged or not as described, contact us with a photo and your order number.
